A Boston attorney, Peabody was a vocal critic of Christian Science, the religious movement that Mark Twain was at the time discussing in a series of articles for the North American Review December 1902; January, February, April 1903. Peabody had delivered an address attacking Christian Science at Tremont in Boston on 1 August 1901. On 2 December 1902, having read Mark Twain’s’Christian Science’ in the North American Review for that month, Peabody sent Mark Twain a copy of the pamphlet version of the address, entitled A Complete Exposé of Eddyism or Christian Science and the Plain Truth in Plain Terms Regarding Mary Baker G. Eddy, Founder of Christian Science (Boston, 1901). The present postcard refers to a section of the pamphlet in which Peabody commented on the’rules and by-laws’ of Christian Science Publishing Society, 1899.
