Civil War-dated endorsement as president, signed “Abraham Lincoln, March 16, 1865, ” at the conclusion of a manuscript document, one page, 6.5 x 2, in full: Let the within named prisoners be discharged on taking the oath of 8th December 1863. Attractively matted and framed with a sketch of Lincoln meeting with his advisors to an overall size of 21.75 x 20.25. On December 8, 1863, President Lincoln issued the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction, by which he offered full pardons to any participant in the rebellion who laid down his arms and swore a loyalty oath, agreeing to’faithfully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the union of all the States there under. Lincoln, penned on the reverse of a one-page letter addressed to Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas by Pennsylvania Congressman Charles O’Neill, dated August 9, 1864 by Lincoln. O’Neill’s letter, in part: My friend Mr. King, a very prominent citizen of Philadelphia, desires a leave of absence for his son Liuet. King of the 15th U. Infantry, who has just left the Hospital at Lookout Mountain, after a very severe spell of sickness and is now on light duty near that locality. ” Lincoln’s endorsement, dated August 10, 1864, in full: “Sec. LEE & JEFFERSON DAVIS. He is arguably the most brilliant commander of field armies in American History. Within months of his surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant and the close of the Civil War, Lee became the President of Washington College where he would remain until his death. Jefferson Davis (18081889) was an American military officer and politician who, after serving as a U. Senator and Secretary of War, was the first and only President of the Confederate States of America from 1861 until its collapse at the end of the Civil War. AUTOGRAPH ALBUM SIGNED BY GENERAL OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES ARMY ROBERT E. LEE AND PRESIDENT OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA JEFFERSON DAVIS ON THE SAME PAGE. Vintage hardcover autograph album owned by a Baltimore resident and signed inside by nearly 75 predominately Confederate figures including Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis on the same page: R. Lee, Lexington, VA, Apr. 30th, 69, and, Jefferson Davis, 14 Oct. On May 1, he went to DC and met with President Grant for the only time after the war to garner his support for the project. NEARLY 75 PREDOMINATELY CONFEDERATE FIGURES HAVE ALSO SIGNED THE ALBUM INCLUDING THE RARE CONFEDERATE CAVALRY OFFICER HARRY GILMOR. Beauregard, and Joseph E. Johnston; William Matthews Merrick, circuit court judge for the District of Columbia and Maryland congressman who was arrested by President Abraham Lincoln after the suspension of habeas corpus; William Pinkney Whyte, 35th Governor of Maryland; Daniel Coit Gilman, first President of Johns Hopkins University; John P. Kennedy, President Millard Fillmores Secretary of the Navy; Reverdy Johnson, Maryland senator and lawyer who defended John Sanford in the Dred Scott case and the Lincoln assassin conspirator Mary Surratt; Thomas E. Bond, father of oral pathology; Stevenson Archer, Maryland congressman; and many more.
