THE BACKSTORY – Florida native, stuntman & filmmaker Ricou Browning played “The Creature From The Black Lagoon” for all of the scenes in and under the water. He was also directed the underwater sequences. He is often credited as the father of underwater photography and cinematography. Stuntman Ben Chapman played the Gillman for all of the scenes filmed on land. Julie Adams played the attractive, intelligent female lead, Kay. THE FEUD – What many fans don’t know is that Browning and Chapman had a decades-long feud over who deserved to call themselves “The Creature”. While each man blamed the other for the feud, Browning was infamous for refusing to sign anything which Chapman had signed. Chapman liked to antagonize Browning by adding “The REEL Gillman” to his signature. Their hostility toward each other means that photos signed by BOTH are considered VERY RARE and TRIPLE-SIGNED photos (Browning, Chapman & Adams) are EXTREMELY RARE!
