Stormbirds Rising by Robert Taylor autographed by four Luftwaffe Jet Pilots
The Me262 was sleek, beautifully proportioned and deadly, and with a top speed of around 540mph was a 100mph faster than anything in the Allied arsenal. It could have changed the course of the war. After leaving their base at Parchim, Leutnant Hermann Buchner and the Me262 jet pilots of III. /JG7 climb to intercept a large formation of American heavy bombers, during the final weeks of WWII. Below them the tranquility of the meandering River Havel flowing through the countryside west of Berlin, is a stark contrast to the deadly encounters that will soon take place overhead. April 1945: and the end of the war was growing closer. By now the weather was improving and, as the days began to lengthen, the American Eighth Air Force was able to dispatch well over a thousand bombers, with a fighter escort to match, on some of the largest raids of the war. The Allies’ overwhelming strength meant the contest was all but one-sided; yet the expert pilots of the Luftwaffe were still a force to be reckoned with – especially when armed with their revolutionary Me262 jets. Had Hitler recognized the jets’ full potential as a fighter, as Adolf Galland had pushed for, then the course of the war might have been very different. But by the time this radical new jet was put into mass production as a fighter, it was too late to save Hitler’s Reich. Although some 1,400 Me262s were built, rarely more than a couple hundred were fully operational at any one time, continually hampered by shortages of fuel, spare parts and trained pilots. American factories, in contrast, could build that number of combat aircraft in a day. Even so, Allied bombers had frequent contacts with Me262s, especially those of JG7, and had run into serious trouble from the large jet formations that the Gruppe had managed to assemble. Adding great historical importance, this Collector’s. Print is personally autographed by four highly-regarded WWII Jet pilots, including including Hermann Buchner, the Ace featured in. (12 in the Me262). Iron Cross flew the. Knights Cross with Oak Leaves & Swords. RETURN OF THE HUNTERS. Messerschmitt Me262 jets of JG7 return home after intercepting an American raid on Munich air bases, Bavaria, 1945. As the war in Europe drew to its close, an elite group of Luftwaffe fighter pilots, undaunted by the over-whelming odds, heralded in the new Jet Age in a final desperate attempt to defend their homeland. All were veteran combat Aces, most having flown continually since the Battles of France and Britain almost six years earlier. Many had completed upwards of 1000 combat missions, and even as Germany was fast falling to the Allied advances, these remarkable men refused to accept defeat. Roaring off the airfields of southern Germany Willie Messerschmitt’s Me262 jet fighter was faster than anything that had flown before. Thrown into battle whilst still in development, the aircraft was a handful to fly, but in the hands of the most experienced fighter Aces the world has ever known, the Me262 was a force to be reckoned with. This stunning print is personally autographed by three of the most iconic Aces ever to fly the Me262. Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds – 104 victories. Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves, and Swords – 222 victories. Knight’s Cross – 146 victories. The Tirpitz 11 March 1943. On the morning of 11 March 1943, Fw190s from IV. /JG5 left their base to escort the mighty battleship Tirpitz and a screening fleet of escort destroyers and torpedo boats, at the start of a voyage north to Bogen Bay during Operation Rostock, designed to escape the increasingly frequent British bombing raids. Tirpitz would leave southern Norway to join an impressive German naval battle fleet gathering near Narvik, one of the largest German naval bases in Norway. Together with the Scharnhorst , the heavy cruiser Lützow and the light cruiser Nürnberg , they would pose a grave threat to the Arctic convoys. Tirpitz was the flagship of the German Kriegsmarine. After repeated attempts to sink her she was eventually destroyed by Lancaster Bombers of 617 and 9 Squadrons at her anchorage in. On 12 November 1944. This stunning print has been hand numbered and signed by artist as well as one of the few survivors rescued from the upturned hull of the Tirpitz when she was sunk, along with an escort pilot who was. One the last to fly over the sinking vessel. After serving during the Blitzkrieg in France, he then flew as a Me-110 wireless operator over southern Russia, and then night missions against England in Do-217s with I. In September 1943 he trained as a fighter pilot and flew 65 missions in Me109s with III. /JG5 on the Arctic Front, scoring three victories.
