Saint Cloud, 1811 April 21. In French, not translated. To General Henri Clarke, the Duc de Feltre, his Minister of War. With a one-line note in French, possibly in Feltre’s hand, on a 4×1 slip attached by a straight pin (probably from 1811) at lower left: the 21 April to M. Just 11 days before he wrote this letter , on April 10, 1811, the siege of Figueras began. Figueras, in northeastern Spain, is at the foot of the Pyrenees, about 20 miles from the Mediterranean coast. The siege ended on August 19th with a French victory for Jacques MacDonald, Duke of Tarente, Marshal of France, and the defeat of Spanish General Martinez. The day after this letter, the second siege of Badajoz in western Spain at the Portuguese border began. It ended on May 12th with another French victory for General Phillipon and the defeat of British General William Beresford. Viscount Beresford had reorganized the Portuguese army (of which he was made Marshal) in 1809. Lightly soiled at lower right corner. See more material from these signers.
