Partly-printed document signed by, Abraham Lincoln, as President on July 1, 1863, the very day the Battle of Gettysburg started. President Lincoln appoints William E. Holloway as, Third Lieutenant in the Revenue Service of the United States. DOCUMENT SIGNED BY PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN ON JULY 1, 1863, THE VERY DAY THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG STARTED. The document is one page on vellum, countersigned by Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase, measures 15.5 by 12.5 inches, in fine condition with soiling and toning, and matted and framed with a hand-colored steel engraving portrait of Lincoln to an overall size of 30.75 by 20.75 inches. FOUR AND A HALF MONTHS AFTER GETTYSBURG, PRESIDENT LINCOLN DELIVERED HIS FAMOUS GETTYSBURG ADDRESS AT THE OFFICIAL DEDICATION CEREMONY FOR THE NATIONAL CEMETERY OF GETTYSBURG. On November 19, 1863, four and a half months after the Union defeated the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln delivered remarks, which later became known as the Gettysburg Address, at the official dedication ceremony for the National Cemetery of Gettysburg. Though he was not the featured orator that day, Lincolns brief address would be remembered as one of the most important speeches in American history. In it, he invoked the principles of human equality contained in the Declaration of Independence and connected the sacrifices of the Civil War with the desire for a new birth of freedom, as well as the all-important preservation of the Union created in 1776 and its ideal of self-government.
