Apollo 16 Mission Emblem Beta Cloth Signed by Astronaut Charlie Duke16
Apollo 16 Astronaut Charlie Duke Signed Beta Cloth. 9 x 9 swatch of Beta cloth with a printed Apollo 16 mission emblem in the center, signed at the bottom of emblem in fine black felt tip by Charlie Duke, in left corner in fine black felt tip is in all caps “THE VOYAGE OF A LIFETIME” In Excellent condition. I have several differ ant unsigned Beta Cloths with the Mission Emblems on them that I will also be putting on. Beta Cloth Background & Production. Beta cloth is a fire proof material woven from Teflon coated glass fibers. It was supplied to NASA by the Owens Corning Corporation for use as the outer layer of the Apollo space suits and in-flight garments worn by the astronauts after the Apollo 1 fire. In order to reduce the use of flammable materials to a minimum it was logical that the mission patch, NASA insignia, U. Flag, and name tag used on each space suit and coverall from Apollo 7 onwards would also be produced in beta cloth rather than embroidered cloth. In general these beta cloth patches were never made available commercially and are now sought-after collectibles. Owens Corning contracted out the printing of NASA’s beta cloth patches to the Screen Print Corp. Of Coventry Rhode Island. There the insignia were screen printed onto rolls of beta cloth using Roma Chemical Questral pigments. These were then cut into 9″ squares (or 5½” in the case of the ASTP patches) with the printed designs at the centers. The hand-drawn’cut lines’ for the edges of these squares are often visible on one or more sides of beta cloth patches, as can be seen in the example on the left. The beta cloth patches were supplied to NASA in this form, and many were carried as souvenirs on missions without any further treatment. Apollo 16 Astronaut Charlie Duke. EXPERIENCE: When notified of his selection as an astronaut, Duke was at the Air Force Aerospace Research Pilot School as an instructor teaching control systems and flying in the F-101, F-104, and T-33 aircraft. He graduated from the Aerospace Research Pilot School in September 1965 and stayed on there as an instructor. He is a retired Air Force Reserve Brigadier General and was commissioned in 1957 upon graduation from the Naval Academy. Upon entering the Air Force, he went to Spence Air Base, Georgia, for primary flight training and then to Webb Air Force Base, Texas, for basic flying training, where in 1958 he became a distinguished graduate. He was again a distinguished graduate at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, where he completed advanced training in F-86L aircraft. Upon completion of this training, he served three years as a fighter interceptor pilot with the 526th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Germanypilot with the 526th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. He has logged 4,147 hours flying time, which includes 3,632 hours in jet aircraft. Duke was one of the 19 astronauts selected by NASA in April 1966. He served as member of the astronaut support crew for the Apollo 10 flight. He was CAPCOM for Apollo 11, the first landing on the Moon and he served as backup lunar module pilot on Apollo 13. Duke served as lunar module pilot of Apollo 16, April 16-27, 1972. He was accompanied on the fifth manned lunar landing mission by John W. Young (spacecraft commander) and Thomas K. Mattingly II (command module pilot). Apollo 16 was the first scientific expedition to inspect, survey, and sample materials and surface features in the Descartes region of the rugged lunar highlands. Duke and Young commenced their record setting lunar surface stay of 71 hours and 14 minutes by maneuvering the lunar module “Orion” to a landing on the rough Cayley Plains. In three subsequent excursions onto the lunar surface, they each logged 20 hours and 15 minutes in extravehicular activities involving the emplacement and activation of scientific equipment and experiments, the collection of nearly 213 pounds of rock and soil samples, and the evaluation and use of Rover-2 over the roughest and blockiest surface yet encountered on the moon. Other Apollo 16 achievements included the largest payload placed in lunar orbit (76, 109 pounds); first cosmic ray detector deployed on lunar surface; first lunar observatory with the far UV camera; and longest in-flight EVA from a command module during transearth coast (1 hour and 13 minutes). The latter feat was accomplished by Mattingly when he ventured out to “Casper’s” SIM-bay for the retrieval of vital film cassettes from the panoramic and mapping cameras. Apollo 16 concluded with a Pacific Ocean splashdown and subsequent recovery by the USS TICONDEROGA. With the completion of his first space flight, Duke has logged 265 hours in space and over 21 hours of extra vehicular activity. Duke also served as backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 17. In December 1975, Duke retired from the Astronaut program to enter private business. He is owner of Duke Investments, and is President of Charlie Duke Enterprises. He is an active speaker and Christian lay witness and President of Duke Ministry For Christ. NASA’s Apollo 11 Astronaut. Signed this beautiful 8×10 color Print on. Signed with a Blue Sharpie pen. Your photo may not be the exact photo shown in the listing, but one nearly identical. Simply place items in the cart and then check out. But since photos are practically weightless, then this is really not an issue. When you place these items in your cart, it gives you the option to send me an invoice. You pay only that amount. A Word About Certificates of Authenticity (COAs). Thank you for your interest, but no, we do not believe in COAs, and neither should. Nor should you be placing your trust in them either, as a. COA does not prove anything. A COA is signed by someone you do not personally know, could probably never find again, and who may or may not be an expert in anything. Additionally, people have issued COAs on our autographs as though they were their pieces originally—all the more reason to avoid COAs. In the case of most of our items, there is more than just a signature—-there is an entire sentence. To see more handwriting and to know that the item is real. Forgers may be able to write someone’s name and occasionally fool people; however, trying to forge an entire sentence in someone else’s handwriting is nearly impossible. If you are seeking COAs with your autographs, then the question you should be asking yourself is this. What does the COA do for me? A collector needs to educate himself as to what the handwriting of the person he is collecting looks like, and then he will know if it is real or not by his own knowledge. Do not leave this to someone else to do for you. You need to know that your item is authentic because you have done your homework—-not because some piece of paper signed by someone you do not know and who wants to sell you something says it is authentic. If you have not done your homework, and if you have not researched and are familiar with the handwriting of the person whom you are collecting, then with all due respect, then you do not know what you are doing and have no business collecting autographs. Placing your faith in COAs to serve as your proof that your item is real is irresponsible and quite risky. Houses and cars are issued titles—not autographs. So for these reasons, we do not issue COAs. Once the astronauts start passing away, and they are as we speak. Then these prices will go higher. I hoped that this helped you to understand our field a little better. Ood luck to you building your space autograph collection. Sellers Note, The 50th Anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 mission is on months away. Apollo 11 was the fifth manned mission of NASA’s Apollo program and the first to land on the moon. The crew consisted of Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin. On July 20, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped on the lunar surface and fulfilled a nations goal set by President John F. Kennedy nearly a decade earlier. The display is centered around a vintage NASA WSS Apollo 11 crew lithograph signed by commander Neil Armstrong. The image is a vintage lithograph which is signed”Neil Armstrong” [Note, non-inscribed autograph] on his image in blue pen. The lithograph measures 10.00 x 8.00 inches and is in fine condition. Mounted below the photograph are the autographs of Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins signed as follows, a Buzz Aldrin autograph signed”Buzz Aldrin” in blue felt tip pen on a page and a Michael Collins autograph signed”Mike Collins” in black felt pen on a page. The autographs are bold, display very nicely and are in fine condition. The complete set of autographs were reviewed and authenticated [in person not through scans] by Zarelli Space Authentication and the display will be accompanied with the above Letter of Authenticity. Also mounted within the display are the following items, an Apollo 11 mission patch, an Apollo 11 plaque listing the names of the crew and a American flag. The display has been professionally framed and assembled with the photograph and the autographs double matted with an black inner matte and a silver outer matte. The display has been assembled in all acid-free material including a UV protective panel to protect the autographs. The frame is a professionally assembled black wood frame with a silver inner trim and measures 21.00 x 16.00 inches. The display is stunning and will be the center of any moon walker collection. With the recent passing of Neil Armstrong and his refusal to sign autographs since 1994, the value of Apollo 11 autographs have soared. Clearly in a few years, Apollo 11 autographs are going to be unattainable for the average collector. The autographs offered above are authentic, documented hand signed examples and are outstanding investments for the future. We have also listed or will be listing shortly the following Apollo mission crews, Apollo 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17, along with a nice collection of military, aviation and astronaut autographs. Our policy is simple, all our autographs are researched and guaranteed authentic with”No” time limits. Check out my other items.
